Town of Avon Senior Water System Operator

The Town of Avon Department of Public Works seeks qualified candidates for the position of Senior Water System Operator for the Avon treatment and distribution water system, which currently includes six groundwater sources and well pump stations; corrosion control and green sand/GAC filtration; 1,600+ service connections, 35 ½ miles of distribution mains. Technical, supervisory and administrative, and work managing the Town of Avon water system and insuring the safe provision of drinking water and regulatory compliance.

Under the direction of the Lead Operator and Assistant Director/Operations Manager, performs complex and highly responsible duties requiring a high level of initiative and independent judgment in the planning, administration and execution of the department's programs and services, and in an environment where situations are not clearly defined; in the direction of personnel; required to work independently in formulating decisions regarding department policies, procedures, and plans. Normally serves as the Secondary Treatment and Primary Distribution Operator, and Primary Treatment in absence of the Lead Operator.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma, GED or equivalent. Water quality program certification and/or associate degree in a related discipline desired. Must have a minimum of four years of progressively responsible water system experience, including operations, maintenance, and construction, including supervisory responsibilities. Other minimum requirements include T2/D2 license or better, MA CDL license with airbrake endorsement, and Massachusetts Hoisting Class 2A and 1C, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Municipal experience preferred.

The successful applicant shall be required to pass a MassDOT physical and CORI check. The starting rate for this union position is $30.76 per hour, plus benefits for a Grade PW-3, Step 1. Additional $65.00 per week for licenses.

The work week is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as necessary.
